SUGAR SMART NEWS AROUND THE UK

First ever drinking fountain toolkit launched

Sustain and City to Sea have launched the Drinking Water Fountain ‘How To Guide’, which is the first comprehensive guidance of its kind specifically for the UK.

06/06/2019

The two organisations who are responsible for Refill (City to Sea) and SUGAR SMART (Sustain) part of the Sustainable Food Cities network have produced the toolkit to respond to increasing local demand for such guidance across the UK. Businesses, local authorities, landowners and community groups are switching on to the twin needs to provide healthier alternatives to sugary drinks that don’t contribute to the environmental damage caused by plastic bottles.

The toolkit pulls together examples of fountains that have been installed recently in a variety of settings, including schools, parks, community and youth groups, along with indicative costings of the projects. The toolkit offers a step by step guide to the practicalities of installation, links and recommendations to those who can help, as well as guidelines that need to be met.

Ben Reynolds, Sustain’s Deputy CEO, commented, “When we launched the Children’s Health Fund in 2015, we had hundreds of groups applying for funding to install drinking fountains. We would have loved to have a toolkit like this available back then. We hope this will provide a valuable resource with which we can encourage the spread of good quality drinking fountains in future.”
