Lewisham Pharmacy sets a SUGAR SMART example
Lewisham Pharmacy joins SUGAR SMART and sets an example for others with pledges to stop selling sugary drinks and promote Change4Life healthy eating information.
Lewisham Pharmacy is one of the newest local businesses to join the SUGAR SMART Lewisham campaign. They are also the first pharmacy to go SUGAR SMART, showing that pharmacies can and should be healthy spaces promoting healthy choices.
Darshan Nenghandi, pharmacist and owner of Lewisham Pharmacy said:
As a health care professional, I am concerned about the increasing trends of obesity and type 2 diabetes in our borough. I also feel a responsibility to engage and communicate the important health message of reducing added sugar intake in all our diets, but especially children’s.
The pharmacy has pledged to stop stocking sugary drinks and only sell water; keep sweets out of children's sight; and engage customers on the issue by giving out Change4Life How Food Smart Are You information packs.
Lewisham Pharmacy joins over 75 businesses and organisations who have signed up to SUGAR SMART Lewisham. These include schools, nurseries, food businesses, pharmacies, GP practices and football clubs. Other food businesses that have recently joined Sugar Smart include Mekan restaurant in Catford and La Pizzeria on Brownhill Road. Mekan pledge to reduce their dessert options and offer tap water to all customers, whilst La Pizzeria pledge to reduce the amount of sugar added to the tomato sauces used on their pizzas.
The Lewisham campaign urges residents to join the SUGAR SMART movement. Individuals can ask their favourite local restaurant, shop or café to find out what they are doing to make Lewisham a healthier place to live, and ask them to join the SUGAR SMART campaign.
SUGAR SMART is run by Sustain and Jamie Oliver, and is the feature campaign of the Sustainable Food Cities network until mid-2018.
